Modern dentistry is torn between a minimally invasive approach or aggressive extractions with replacement by implants. What is the evidence regarding IPS e.max restorations? And how reliable is minimally invasive dentistry? Additionally, the decision-making process between extraction and restoration will be discussed.
The progressive shift towards minimally invasive dentistry is evident. The ultimate goal is to preserve as much of the tooth structure as possible and extend pulpal vitality. Another noticeable trend in restorative dentistry is the move towards metal-free restorations. These tooth-colored restorations must withstand demanding multi-factorial oral conditions, and as such, some failures related to technical and/or biological aspects are anticipated.
This presentation will review the findings of clinical studies on the survival of glass ceramic complete and partial coverage restorations. It will then present data on the incidence of endodontic therapy following the placement of either complete or partial coverage glass ceramic restorations. Finally, it will address the terminal treatment modality – replacing a tooth with an implant. Is it truly a complication-free solution? The discussion will cover what clinicians should expect with implant-retained restorations and how complications can be minimized.
About Mariam Margvelashvili-Malament, DMD, MSc, PhD, FACP
Dr. Mariam Margvelashvili-Malament is a Diplomate of the American Board of Prosthodontics. She received her Certificate of Specialty in Prosthodontics with honorary distinction from Tufts University School of Dental Medicine (TUSDM). She also earned her Certificate of Fellowship in Implant Dentistry from TUSDM with a distinctive International Team for Implantology (ITI) Scholarship. In addition, she holds both a Master of Science and a Ph.D. in Dental Materials from the University of Siena, Italy. Dr. Margvelashvili-Malament earned her first DMD degree from Tbilisi State University in Georgia and her second DMD degree from TUSDM.
Currently, Dr. Margvelashvili-Malament serves as an Associate Professor of Prosthodontics at Tufts University School of Dental Medicine and as a visiting Associate Professor at the University of Georgia. She practices specialty prosthodontics at Boston Prosthodontics, where her clinical expertise covers all aspects of Implant, Esthetic, and Reconstructive Dentistry.
Dr. Margvelashvili-Malament has published nearly 50 articles and abstracts in international peer-reviewed journals and scientific programs. She has co-authored chapters in four textbooks and serves as a reviewer for several impact-factor dental journals (JPD, IJP, JERD, among others). She is a fellow of the American College of Prosthodontists and an Associate Fellow of the Greater New York Academy of Prosthodontics.
Additionally, Dr. Margvelashvili-Malament is a co-author of the national residency program in Prosthodontics in Georgia and the Founding Chair and author of the International Dental Program at the University of Georgia. She frequently lectures on dental implants and esthetics at national and international dental meetings.
